More Than Squirrels is a micro site that uses illustration, animation, and parallax scrolling to capture the chaotic essence of ADHD from a perspective based on those who have it. Through narrative, analogy, and relatable language, viewers are shown a gritty, personal, and sometimes unfortunate reality of what having ADHD actually is like.
About this Project
Personally, since I can remember, I have struggled with ADHD even after years on medication. However, in the past year I started to learn much more about what ADHD is. The things I thought that made me not so great turned out to actually just be parts of ADHD that I, myself, didn't even know are because of it.
There’s so many stereotypes and misleading information throughout the media about ADHD, and little accurate representation. The goal of this project was to address the realities in an erratic, true ADHD fashion to give a better look at what it’s like for someone with ADHD.
The Process
The original concept was for this project to be a comic book. The development and initial sketching is important to include to tell the story of how I ultimately ended up where I did.
Developing the Script
I developed the script based off of 100s of r/ADHD posts to reddit and several tweets and instagram posts about ADHD. I have added an initial example of some of the kinds of posts from reddit, and then broke down some of the more major parts of the script with some references to the kinds of statements and thoughts that went into the inspiration for those sections.
Design Development and Layout
I used Adobe Illustrator, After Effects, and ReadyMag to put the whole thing together. Illustrator was used to create the graphics and layout the entirety of the content. After Effects was used to take the graphics from stills to animated and in motion, and ReadyMag was used to put everything together and create a parallax, animated scrolling ability.
